I spent most of my day working on a presentation about Augmented Reality. I am very excited about what I have learned.
From what I know, there are 2 main types of AR- Maker-based AR and Marker-less AR. Marker-based AR needs ink/pictures to be activated, while marker-less AR is much more flexible. Examples of Marker-based AR include Burger King’s “Burn the Ad” campaign, which let people scan the QR code posters; the scanner’s phone screen would set fire, leaving them a coupon for a free whopper. Marker-less AR is further divided into location-based, projection-based, overlay, and contour-based. Pokemon GO is the most typical kind of location-based AR. I also mentioned Microsoft’s Hololens being used in operating rooms and medical training, which uses overlay technology. It essentially creates an augmented version of the object, allowing us to observe and dissect the object via the headset.
I told KF about AR and turned out he already knew as much as I did. He also showed me his gaming device’s AR capabilities. It was a game where you can take a selfie of yourself and it will plug your face on to a monster’s body and you will shoot the monster to gain points. There was supposed to also be a card where Mario will pop up after you scan it. That would be another perfect example of marker-based AR, but he couldn’t find it anywhere.
