Wow, I still can’t believe that my team is the champion of the 2021 NielsenIQ Case Competition! We surpassed 428 teams of 1600+ participants from Vietnam, Australia, Korea, the UK, and the US after a preliminary round of MCQs and 2 case-solving rounds – all done in the span of 3 weeks. It was a global virtual competition, organized by NielsenIQ team in Vietnam.
Each round, we had 24 hours to solve the case then deliver our presentation. The level of difficulty increased as we moved on to the next round. For example, in the semi-final round we were asked to propose an M&A strategy, then in the final round, we worked on a Category Management case. We were given an Excel of raw data and a PowerPoint consisting of the prompt as well as the background information of the companies. From there, we made visualizations to draw insights from them before giving some recommendations accordingly. After that, we delivered our presentation to the judges and the executives from NielsenIQ Vietnam, MegaMart Vietnam, and Nutifood.
Our team, Data Queendom, was all-girl. Linh Tran goes to Bentley University, MA; Pat Nguyen is in University of Cincinnati, OH; while Duong Ngo and I goes to Villanova University, PA. Bad news was that none of us were in Vietnam, and we all had to work around the clock and schoolwork. However, everything turned out to be very convenient, since we were all on Eastern time zone and we have My Tran from NielsenIQ, who helped us communicating with the organizing team throughout the competition. We were also fortunate enough to meet and learn from Mr. Long Le, Ms. Lizzie Duong, Mr. Tran Tri Minh Trung who took their time to listen to our concerns and gave us lots of helpful advice about data analytics and presentation. They truly cared about us and just wanted to see us having fun while gaining analytic experiences.
